Butterflies

This is an interactive audio-visual installation created for the Glastonbury Festival 2017, then used at the Fire in the Mountain festival in 2018, then again at Glastonbury in 2019.

The installation consists of a grid of full-colour LEDs (NeoPixel) each covered with an origami butterfly made of translucent paper, laid out in the ceiling of a tunnel linking two fields at the festival. Infrared sensors along the length of the tunnel track people's movement and the software cause the butterflies to 'swarm' above them and follow them through the tunnel.

The software was written in Java, using the GpioMofo framework I created for earlier projects.
